Spring!

The first day of Spring is finally here!  We celebrated with an old fashioned Egg Hunt!  Thanks for all the donations!

Then to celebrate, we let the children play on the Second Grade Playground - a rare treat!

Finally it was back to the room to check out our goodies!

2013 Boosterthon

Under an overcast,  gray sky, the students boogied on down and ran 28-40 laps each!  Great music!  Great exercise!  Great fun!  Great fundraiser!

Sleepover Rocked!

We had such great fun today!  The day started with a parade lead by the Principal dressed in red footie pajamas!

 Then there was a little dancing from kids...

and from teachers...



and a class picture!

The children loved reading in the dark with flashlights!

 Mrs. Snead, our Art teacher, had the students splatter painting a starry, starry night collage.

 Coach Bailey had us play a game with light sabers and asteroids!

 Coach Robinson, dressed as Captain Kirk, led us into the planetarium and showed us the night sky!

We reviewed everything we've learned this week with a little Bingo challenge!

 

 And then it was to Mrs. KK's Sleepover Party which was a blast with a glow-in-the-dark puppet show, dancing, popcorn and a movie!

 What a day!  Anybody else need a nap?!!

Starry Starry Family Night

Tonight families joined us for a night under the stars....only the outside event turned into an inside event...   Afraid that the night air would be too cool, all the festivities were brought inside instead of watching the movie outside under the stars.  Then the wind slowed the chicken and the French Fries so dinner moved so s-l-o-w, but families still came, enjoyed dinner, and the movie in the Dining Room on the floor in sleeping bags.  Parents had donated Cosmic Brownies, Star Crunch, and Moon Pies for the children to enjoy during the movie.

The absolute highlight of the evening was 5th grade Science teacher Carolyn Swidorsky bringing her telescope and having the children look at Jupiter and its four moons - a once in a lifetime activity for many of the students and their families!  She also explained an app called Sky Walk that parents could download on their phones to help them identify what they see in the night sky.  Too cool!

The Pillows are Amazing!

For Sleepover each child is asked to work with his/her family at home and design an oiginal pillow to use at Friday's Sleepover.  The pillows came in this week and are dispalyed in the front Lobby.  We have planets and stars, suns and moons, and plenty of teddy bears.  Today each student wrote about "How to Make a Pillow."

Sleepover begins...

Sleepover week has begun!  Each classroom is a planet and we are the Planet Earth!  The planet banners went up throughout the hallway along with each student's original pajamas!

So today we checked our raised garden after all the rain last week and were thrilled to see that the broccoli is a foot high and the cabbage has large leaves and is beginning to make a ball in the middle! We even pulled up one little carrot that was orange but only about an inch long!

Then we checked the potatoes that we planted in the school plot.  At first the children were disappointed that nothing was growing...

until Mrs. Ruark pulled back the leaves over each mound to reveal beautiful green potato plants!  The leaves and straw were being used to protect the plants during this snap of cold weather.  Can't wait to see how it all works out!
