Our Peeps

Guess what we did?  We visited the Chets Creek Chicken Coop who now has its own little chicks.  That's right - in case you didn't know the fifth graders have a chicken coop and each year hatch their own chickens.  The eggs recently hatched and WE got a tour!

Easter Fun!

What a fun day on our last day before the Easter Break!  We made Peeps on a Nest, played Spring Bingo,  and sorted and graphed jelly beans by color.  Each of the children bought a basket from home and we had an amazing Easter Egg Hunt, ending the by dying eggs.

Lester's Contining Inspiration

Children's author Lester Laminack visited our classroom after speaking to the kindergarten.  He sat with many of our students and conferred with them about their writing.  After Mr. Laminack's visit , our Australian student decided to go home and write his very own thank you letter to Lester. He wanted to personally deliver the letter to Lester before he left Chets Creek to continue his journey onto other schools. Mr. Laminack graciously read his letter with much interest and intrigue. Our student wrote about how much he loved when Lester came into our classroom and how he sat and talked to him about his opinion writing. He talked about how his favorite part in Trevor's Wiggly Wobbly Tooth was when grandmas teeth fell out. "It was gross" he said.

Lester told our friend that he had never received a letter from an Australian student before and that it meant a great deal to him. He also went on to say that he knows the great Australian children's author Mem Fox and that he would show her the letter. You could see the wonder in our student's eyes as he stood and listened to Mr. Laminack speak.

Thank you Lester for continuing to provide the hope and wonder that children so desperately need to become successful adults in this ever changing world. You are an inspiration, not only for children but for teachers as well. Until next time...

Is it real?

Today we looked at pictures of real animals and animals that are not real. We compared and contrasted the real and the not real. Finally we compared Kisses, our hamster pet, with a hamster puppet by letting Kisses roll around the classroom.

Fashion Disaster Day

Today we are showing our school spirit by wearing wacky tacky fashions. Many of us wore shoes that did not match! What a fun day!
How do you like our stylin' and profilin' hair?

Lester's in the house!

Today the children at Chet's Creek had the thrill of being entertained by famous children's author Lester Laminack. Lester has written over 30 books for children and for teachers and he is a storyteller extraordinaire. Not only did the children listen to him tell stories, but later he came into our Writers' Workshop and had individual conferences with some of our kiddos. How exciting is that!

Although Lester said he not visited this student's homeland of Australia, he did say that Australian author, Mem Fox, was a friend!

Get ready Mom.  Lester helped this student firm up his arguments for getting a puppy that he already thinks his dad and brother want!  Oh my!

What a special day!

Honesty

Our character trait for February was honesty.  Mrs. Jackson has been into our class and read books and told stories about characters who were honest.  The book characters were honest when it was easy and when it wasn't so easy.

Our student this month that shows the characteristic of honesty is an easy choice.  She  simply tells the truth.  She is sincere, truthful, trustworthy and honorable.  She would tell the truth despite the consequences.  We are so proud of this Superstar!
