Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse
Today we read a new Kevin Henkes' book, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. The students have a series of pictures that they cut out and sequenced so they could practice retelling the story. They will be bringing them home tonight so they can retell the story to their families. If they retell the story, and families write a note, the child will get a treat tomorrow! Before your child retells tonight, you might want to watch the following video of the story.

The Artist
Our author study of Kevin Henkes was written in house, here at Chets Creek. Four years ago a first grader was asked to illustrate the author study for us and she did. So today, my students were coloring outlined pictures of puppet figures that she drew four years ago when she was a first grader, to retell the story of Owen by Kevin Henkes.
Owen by Kevin Henkes
Today students heard the delightful story of Owen, the little mouse with the fuzzy yellow blanket. Students used puppets to act out this popular story at school. They have the puppets in their blue folders and have instructions to retell the story to their families tonight. Listening to the story above may help as you support your student's retelling. If families write a note that their child retold the story with the puppets, they will get a treat. Happy retelling!

Pillowcases!
On a cold and wet night, twenty families from our class came out to make a one-of-a-kind pillowcase! The Family Night is part of our Sleepover Week festivities. We welcomed a hundred first grade families across the grade level. You could hear the laughter and the excitement as the families crafted away and completed their pillowcase project. We hope that the children will see this keepsake years from now and remember this special night with their families at the Creek!

Shoeless...
Mrs. Ruark has been throwing and kicking the football with a group of students during recess for the past month. The boys, especially, seem to enjoy passing and kicking the football and have continued to play in small groups. Today we had a student come over during recess with one shoe on and one shoe off. "What happened to your shoe?" "Well... I kicked the football and my shoe came off with the football and now it's on top of the building!"
So... off to the office we went (laughing all the way!) Ralph, our trusted custodian, climbed the ladder and slowly crawled across the roof, while teachers and students with walkie talkies on the second floor directed him toward the shoe... and Principal Phillips stood on top of the ladder directing the entire scene! (Can't you just picture it?!) Only at the Creek!
I swear - we don't make this stuff up! By the way - the student did go home with both shoes!

Palm Gardens
Today our students made 100 Valentines cards and decorated cookies that will be given to the residents of Palm Gardens Nursing Home here in Jacksonville. Thanks to Leland's mom for the idea and delivering the treats, and to our loyal group of moms who came to help us complete this unselfish and loving act for Valentines.

1,000,000 words
Each nine weeks Mrs. Phillips celebrates each child's journey toward reading 1,000,000 words in the classroom during the school year by doing something for the students that is fun and memorable. This nine weeks she played Bingo with all of the first grade students and made sure that every single child was a winner.
