The Artist
Our author study of Kevin Henkes was written in house, here at Chets Creek. Four years ago a first grader was asked to illustrate the author study for us and she did. So today, my students were coloring outlined pictures of puppet figures that she drew four years ago when she was a first grader, to retell the story of Owen by Kevin Henkes.
The children were so surprised to learn that the first grade artist is now a fifth grader and our very own patrol! Talented artist... beautiful fifth grader! They grow up so fast!

What a special memory for her to be able to work with a class while using this unit. She loved learning from it as a first grader and will always love Kevin Henkes books because of it!
